In 1972, the ambition of the architects of the Part-Dieu Tower was to rival the height of Lyon's Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica, as if to converse with the gods.
As early as the 1970s, its cylindrical appearance and pyramid-shaped top earned the building the popular nickname of
the "Pencil Tower", and this was long before the Celest Restaurant and the 4-star Radisson Blu Hotel took up residence in the tower's top eight floors, offering some of the finest views over Lyon.
